Seahawks legends Steve Largent and Tyler Lockett share a birthday

September 28th is a day Seattle Seahawks fans are going to have to start circling on their calendar. Earlier on Saturday we reported how the 28th was wide receiver Tyler Lockett’s birthday, and how he is the second best wide receiver in Seahawks history. The first of course is Steve Largent, who also happens to celebrate his birthday on September 28th!

Perhaps it is fate these two are forever connected, even as much as sharing the date of their birth, and birthplace of Tulsa, OK.

Fans in the Pacific Northwest will always recognize the greatness of Steve Largent, but it always helps to remind folks just how elite he was. Not only was Largent the undisputed face of the franchise for the Seahawks in their early years, he was inarguably the best wide receiver in the NFL during his prime. When Largent finally called it a career, he was No. 1 in NFL history when it came to receptions, yards and receiving touchdowns.

In fact, Steve Largent was the first wide receiver to catch 100 touchdown receptions.

As for Tyler Lockett, who trails only Largent in the all-time Seahawks receiving leaderboards, has won an award named in his honor, twice. Every year, the Seahawks give out the Steve Largent Award, which is given to the Seahawks player or coach who best exemplifies the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks. Lockett took home these honors in 2021 and 2022.

When walking around Seattle on game day, seeing Largent’s No. 80 jersey is a common sight and has been for decades. But these days, Lockett’s No. 16 is one of the more frequent jerseys I see each week the Seahawks play at Lumen. I have a feeling we will continue to see No. 16 long after Lockett is done playing, the same way we’ll always see No. 80 around.
