Football a go for San Jose State?

College sports are changing by the second on what will be played or not played in the fall. College football drives it all and is the most important sport when it comes to creating revenue for all of the other sports.

The state of California has been one of the most strict in when it will come back, and that includes the state system saying classes will basically be virtual. That goes against what NCAA president Mark Emmert said campuses need to be open.

It all seemed bleak but California governor Gavin Newsom is easing some restrictions on the state and went as far as to say pro sports could be able to be played in early June and without fans.

This leads us to an interview on KNBR in San Francisco which San Jose State athletics director Marie Tuite said that the plan is to have the university open and the hope is that there will be fall sports but, “there may not be many fans in the stands.”

This is a big development, to say the least. San Jose State is part of the California State System and they said schools would be mostly online. Saying San Jose State is open does not mean in-person learning will be the norm, so there is some wiggle room with that phrasing which clearly was done intentionally.

Having an athletics director come out and lean toward fall sports being played is good news for those who participate and watch is a large step to get back to sports, specifically college football. Yet, there are no specifics about how a season will be played because there are a lot of options that include conference only games or a condensed season.

With the Bay Area being one of the more hard-hit areas, it would seem that schools across the state could follow what San Jose State is discussing. However, there is no official word from anyone on how college football will start, but look for some sort of official word by mid-July.
