San Diego State at Nevada: Three things to know

  1. San Diego State enters this one as the slight road favorites over unbeaten Nevada, and there are a couple of reasons that isn’t so surprising. The Aztecs rank fourth in the country with 280.3 rushing yards per game, and they’re fourth overall in defense with 12.8 point per game allowed.
  2. The Aztecs defense has been on fire, allowing just 243.5 total YPG, ranking second overall, while yielding just 152.3 passing YPG (3rd in the nation) and 91.3 rushing YPG (7th). LB Caden McDonald is a disrupter, posting 4.5 sacks so far.
  3. Nevada is unbeaten thanks to a powerful offense, as the Wolf Pack rank second in the country with 382.8 passing YPG. QB Carson Strong has passed for 1,517 yards with 12 TDs, including at least three in three of his four 2020 outings.

San Diego State at Nevada: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

San Diego State 24, Nevada 20

Money line (ML)

SAN DIEGO STATE (-125) is favored on the road because of its D. Defense wins championships, trumping offense nearly every time. Nevada (+105) has been sharp, but the jury is still out since its past three wins are against UNLV, Utah State and New Mexico, the bottom of the barrel in the Mountain West.

Against the spread (ATS)

SAN DIEGO STATE -2 (-110) is a solid play. Yes, it has beaten UNLV and Utah State, common opponents, but it also was solid in shutting down a very good Hawaii offense 34-10 last week. The Aztecs have covered three of four overall, including their only road trip. They’ll take care of business here, too.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 47.5 (-115) is an attractive number. Sure, Nevada can sling it, but it hasn’t seen a defense like San Diego State yet. Strong will get the most pressure he might see all season, especially with McDonald lurking.

The Under is 3-1 for San Diego State so far, and, surprisingly, the Under is 3-1 for Nevada, including each of the past three. That’s because its opponents have struggled offensively, and San Diego State won’t be much better. The Aztecs are a running team first, and run-first offenses mean run the clock. Under bettors love that.
