The San Diego Padres (23-16) head up to the Bay for the first of a three-game set against the Oakland Athletics (22-12). The first pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET at Oakland Coliseum. Below, we analyze the Padres-Athletics MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Padres at Athletics: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Zach Davies vs. LHP Jesus Luzardo

Davies in 2020: 5-2 with a 2.61 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 8.1 K/9 and 2.0 BB/9 in 41⅓ IP (7 starts).

  • Last start: Win, 5⅔ IP, 0 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 6 K at the Colorado Rockies Aug. 28 – Padres won 10-4.
  • Through his six seasons, Davies pitched better on the road than at home. Davies has a 24-13 road record with a 3.05 ERA and a 1.23 WHIP, while he’s 24-21 with a 4.52 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP at home.

Luzardo in 2020: 2-1 with a 3.74 ERA, 1.37 WHIP, 9.1 K/9 and 3.5 BB/9 in 33 ⅔ IP (5 starts and 2 relief appearances).

  • Last start: Loss, 6⅔ IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 2 BB, 7 K at the Texas Rangers Aug. 24 – A’s lost 3-2.
  • The 22-year-old has only five starts under his belt, but his home ERA is 1.82 compared to a 4.71 ERA on the road.

Prediction

Padres 6, Athletics 3

Moneyline (ML)

The Athletics (-139) return after several games were postponed due to a positive COVID-19 test within the organization. Oakland, which is 13-4 at home, dropped both games of a seven-inning doubleheader at the Houston Astros Aug. 29.

The PADRES (+125) are 11-10 on the road, losing 2-0 at the Los Angeles Angels Thursday. The loss broke a 3-game winning streak for the Padres, but they are poised for a bounce-back win. San Diego is 5-0 in their last five vs. a team with a winning record.

Given Davies’ road splits and the absence of the A’s leadoff hitter Semien, take the PADRES.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PASS. We’re on the Padres (+1.5, -176) to win outright, so that cancels Athletics (-1.5 +145). Oakland is on top of its division and is a tough home team. I am not touching the Padres on the alternate run line either.

Over/Under (O/U)

Though he’s still young, Luzardo performs better at home compared to the road so there is a scenario where we have a pitchers’ duel. My projection is that this one goes Over 8.5 (-110), but I’m not confident enough to bet it. PASS on an O/U bet.
