The San Antonio Spurs are maintaining their status quo in Bleacher Report’s weekly NBA power rankings, coming in yet again at No. 26 overall of 30 in Andy Bailey’s weekly assessment of the Association. “The losses keep piling up, and the net rating is still in a woeful bottom five that has every team lower than minus-9.0, but the San Antonio Spurs have actually shown some signs of life of late,” writes the B/R analyst.
“In January, their net rating is a far more respectable plus-1.0, and Victor Wembanyama is looking more and more comfortable as a 5,” he adds.
“In the 16 games he’s played since Zach Collins left the starting lineup, Wemby is averaging a truly preposterous 20.9 points, 10.7 rebounds, 3.7 blocks, 3.4 assists and 0.9 steals in just 26.6 minutes,” recounts Buckley.

One has to wonder what those numbers might look like with the right sort of players — starting with a true, starter-level NBA floor general — given the results of an expanded role for the French wunderkind.
With the trade deadline inching ever closer, we might actually get to find out — so long as the front office doesn’t lean into player development and the improved draft odds that will bring.
