Sam Howell will open Commanders training camp as starting quarterback

Former UNC football quarterback Sam Howell will be the Washington Commanders’ starting quarterback when training camp opens.

The Washington Commanders appear to be happy with what quarterback Sam Howell has shown them thus far in the offseason.

After the team wrapped up OTA’s and minicamp this offseason, head coach Ron Rivera is pleased with Howell’s performance and told the media that he will open up training camp as QB1 for the Commanders.

“He’s much shown us what we want to see,” Rivera said via ProFootballTalk.com.  “He’s young, we know he is young. There was a lot of room for growth, and we know that, but he’s got a good skillset. He’s mobile, he’s got good foot movement, he’s got quick twitch to him, good decision maker. He is still learning to make those decisions, but he’s also got the arm talent and that’s the thing that excites us.”

The Commanders brought in veteran Jacoby Brissett to compete with Howell this offseason, adding another voice in that quarterback room. While Brissett hasn’t been bad, Howell has done enough to have the franchise keep the faith in him at least when camp starts.

A good camp will lead Howell to being the starter come Week 1 and he will get the chance to prove he could be the future of the program as well.
