The Washington Commanders are hoping to usher in the Sam Howell era this year at quarterback, giving the former UNC football standout a chance to win the job early in the offseason.
While the goal is for Howell to be the starter for the long term, there’s going to be some competition.
Head coach Ron Rivera revealed plans to bring in a veteran to compete with Howell after Carson Wentz was released and Taylor Heinicke signing elsewhere. During free agency, the Commanders found that competition.
The team agreed to a deal with veteran Jacoby Brissett on a one-year deal.
New #Commanders QB Jacoby Brissett’s one-year deal:
$4.5 million signing bonus
$3M fully guaranteed base salary
$500K workout bonus
Up to $2M in playtime incentivesBase: $8M.
Max: $10M.— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) March 16, 2023
The deal allows Brissett to try to win the starting job from Howell, and at the worst give him some competition this offseason.
Howell started in one game for the Commanders, beating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18. Howell played well, showing flashes of being a starter in this league. However, it was just one game and there’s work to be done.
