Former North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell is getting his first shot as a starter for the Washington Commanders after the team selected him on Day 3 of the 2022 NFL draft. Howell started one game last season, beating the Dallas Cowboys in Week 18.
And now in 2023, Howell is off to a good start.
With Sunday’s comeback win over Denver, the Commanders moved to 2-0 on the season and Howell moved to 3-0 in his NFL career. Howell played well again, helping lead a comeback as the Commanders were down 21-3 in the first half. Through two games Howell has 501 passing yards, 3 touchdowns, 1 rushing touchdown, 1 interception and a passer rating of 95. All of those are currently best in the NFC East:

The NFC East features Jalen Hurts, Dak Prescott, Daniel Jones and Howell, a pretty good set of quarterbacks in the division.
It is important to note that it is VERY early in the season, and it’s still a small sample size. But it does look like Howell is a capable quarterback. The test does get tougher for the Commanders as they face Buffalo and then Philadelphia in the next two weeks.
