The Washington Commanders have opened up OTA’s as they prepare for the 2023 season. And this offseason, they are ushering in a new era at quarterback with Sam Howell.
The former North Carolina standout is getting the shot to be the starter by taking the reps with the first team. But he will have competition as veteran Jacoby Brissett was signed to challenge him.
So far, things have been both good and a little bad for Howell. On day 1, he had a good day but on Thursday he followed it up with an ‘uneven’ day out there for the Commanders.
Still, Howell earned the praise of new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy following the first practice
“Sam’s done a heck of a job,” Bieniemy said via Commanders beat writer Zach Selby.“Sam’s very professional. He’s very critical of himself.”
Howell has a long ways to go in his development still, starting just one game in the NFL in his rookie year. But the Commanders believe in him and hope he can outright win this job and solve an issue at the position.
