As Sam Howell begins his second season in the NFL, he’s getting the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job with the Washington Commanders. Howell is battling veteran Jacoby Brissett who was signed as a free agent this past offseason.
And we may get an up close and personal view into that quarterback battle on our TV screens.
The Commanders are one of four teams that cannot deny the NFL’s request to put them on the hit Summer series ‘Hard Knocks‘ that airs on HBO. They are in the running with the New York Jets, Chicago Bears, and New Orleans Saints. The NFL formula states that teams who have a first-year head coach in place, have had a playoff berth in the past two seasons or have appeared on “Hard Knocks” in the past 10 years don’t have to be on the show.
The four teams above do not meet the criteria.
Looking at those four teams, the obvious choice would be the Jets with the addition of Aaron Rodgers and being in a big market. The Jets are a promising team going into the 2023 season and will have a lot of attention on them.
Then there’s the Chicago Bears. The team that had the worst record but has a quarterback in Justin Fields that grabs headlines. Chicago has some intriguing pieces as well.
Both the Bears and Jets have expressed displeasure with being on the show but how much will the NFL listen to that?
