Salary cap will jump to $224.8 million in 2023, an NFL record

The salary cap this year will jump to $224.8 million, which is the highest ever and $16.6 million higher than 2022.

The salary cap is making a sizable jump in 2023. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the NFL has informed teams that the salary cap will be $224.8 million this year.

That’s an increase of $16.6 million from last year when the cap was $208.2 million and a rise of $42.3 million since 2021 when it actually dropped due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Obviously, the more cap space teams have, the more they’re able to spend on players – both their own and in free agency. The Rams are currently projected to be over the cap so they’ll need to clear some space before the start of the new league year on March 15.

Previous salary cap projections ranged from $220-225 million, so the NFL went with the higher end of that range.
