The New Orleans Saints announced that wide receiver Marquez Callaway would not return to Week 12’s game with the Denver Broncos after sustaining a knee injury in the second half, though it’s unclear yet just how serious the issue is. Callaway was able to walk to the locker room under his own power before undergoing more tests from the Saints training staff.

Callaway had been one of the team’s breakout rookies, filling in on Sunday for All-Pro return man Deonte Harris. The first-year pro out of Tennessee had accounted for a 17-yard kick return and a 19-yard punt return against Denver before exiting the game. There were opportunities for him to make plays deep downfield on offense, too, but quarterback Taysom Hill missed him.

Hopefully it’s nothing substantial. The Saints receiving corps hasn’t been at full strength for most of the season, having lost the reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Michael Thomas, to a high-ankle sprain for much of the first half. No. 2 wideout Emmanuel Sanders missed two weeks after testing positive for COVID-19, and veteran backup Tre’Quan Smith has been in and out of the lineup with injuries.

To say nothing of Harris, too, who suffered a neck injury last week and was preemptively ruled out for Week 12’s game with the Broncos. Callaway also missed time with an ankle injury earlier this season.
