Here’s a wild card for you. The New Orleans Saints have reportedly requested an interview with New York Giants assistant head coach Mike Kafka, per NFL insider Josina Anderson. Kafka has also held the title of offensive coordinator for Big Blue, but he’s only called plays sparingly under head coach Brian Daboll.

Kafka lost those play calling responsibilities altogether in 2024, but he took a high road and said he was taking it as a learning opportunity. He’s under contract with the Giants through 2025 but you have to think he’d jump at the opportunity to try his hand elsewhere.

He’s young for a head coach candidate at 37, and like Sean Payton previously worked under Andy Reid — Kafka was the Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach from 2018 to 2021, pulling double-duty as their passing game coordinator. Payton once had his play calling duties (with the Giants, under former head coach Jim Fassel) revoked, too.

So we’ll see if anything materializes on this front. It’s easy to understand why fans may feel apprehensive about Kafka given his diminished role on the Giants and their lack of recent success, but the Saints clearly see something in him worth exploring further. Keep an eye out for updates.
