Now that Week 1 of the NFL season has concluded for the New Orleans Saints, additional roster moves are bound to happen. Once the first week is full in the NFL’s rear-view mirror, veteran contract become non-guaranteed. With that, big-named veterans will finally find their landing spots. Not those won’t be the only moves made as the days progress. Today, the Saints made an addition to their practice squad, bringing in a legacy addition.
Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, New Orleans has added former Georgia Tech cornerback Tre Swilling to their practice squad. Yes, of that Swilling family. The son of former Saints legend Pat Swilling. His father ranks second amongst Saints defenders in all-time fumbles forced and fourth in career sacks. Now, Tre Swilling will have the chance to continue following in his dad’s legendary footsteps.

Both father and son attended Georgia Tech, located in the city of Atlanta, where the Saints pulled off an electrifying Week 1 victory. As of Monday, they will have both spent time with same professional team as well. The youngest Swilling spent time this offseason with the Tennessee Titans taking 51 snaps at corner this preseason. Through those snaps, he allowed just 3 catches for 41 receiving yards on 7 targets, forcing a 62.2 NFL passer rating when targeted.
At 6-foot and just over 200 pounds, Swilling has the size to build on in the NFL. But his collegiate production shows that he can benefit from working with defensive backs coach Kris Richard throughout the season.
While at Georgia Tech, Swilling totaled 100 combined tackles, 2 interceptions and 21 passes defended. But his 2,457 collegiate snaps and 55.8 completion percentage allowed when targeted show that there’s definitely something to build upon. And New Orleans, his hometown where he attended Brother Martin High School, may be the best place to do it.
The Saints are no strangers to father-son combos. Fullback Lorenzo Neal and his son, defensive tackle Lorenzo Neal Jr. both had stops in New Orleans. As did wideouts JJ and Jalen McCleskey. The Swillings are next in the recent examples of family lines running through the Crescent City.
