Saints bring back RB Tony Jones Jr. to their practice squad

The Saints brought back RB Tony Jones Jr., signing him to their practice squad after he spent the summer with the Broncos:

This was something we thought might happen: Denver Broncos beat reporter Mike Klis reports that running back Tony Jones Jr. has gone back to the NEw Orleans Saints to sign with their practice squad, reinforcing a position group that’s looked weak with Alvin Kamara suspended for the first three games of the regular season.

Jones spent his summer in Denver competing for a roster spot on Sean Payton’s new team, but the numbers game didn’t work out in his favor. With too many talented running backs jumbled together it made more sense for him to come back to New Orleans to try his luck. The Saints signed Jones as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2020.

He joins a suddenly-crowded running backs room with Jamaal Williams, Kendre Miller, and Kirk Merritt on the 53-man roster (plus fullback Adam Prentice) and two rookie runners on the practice squad in Ellis Merriweather and Jordan Mims, a standout at Fresno State who initially signed with the Buffalo Bills in preseason.
