The New Orleans Saints are still winless in their alternate black helmets. It might be time to retire that look and try again now that the NFL will allow teams to wear three different helmets starting in 2025. There’s an opportunity to get this right.
In a vacuum, the black helmets aren’t the worst thing a team could come up with. But pairing them with white jerseys and pants creates a mismatched look that worsens each element. Lighter helmets that match the popular “Color Rush” jerseys would be an easy choice. Opting to pair these black helmets with the team’s throwback uniforms makes sense, too.
If you’re superstitious enough to suggest a choice of helmet design impacts the game’s result, an 0-4 record in black lids could be reason to put them up on a shelf:
- 2022, Week 4: Loss to Minnesota Vikings, 28-25
- 2022, Week 13: Loss to Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 17-16
- 2023, Week 12: Loss to Atlanta Falcons, 24-15
- 2024, Week 5: Loss to Kansas City Chiefs, 26-13
Will we see the black helmets again this year? Maybe, maybe not. The Saints haven’t been eager to dust them off after the 2022 debut and it might be worth moving on from them altogether. If nothing else, not being able to complain about how the team is dressed would give fans more time to focus on how their squad is performing.
