LSU football is losing another defensive back to the transfer portal with veteran safety Sage Ryan announcing his intention to enter.
Ryan was a five-star recruit when he signed with LSU in 2021. He saw limited action as a freshman, recording four tackles in 121 snaps.
Playing time increased in 2022, but LSU struggled to define a consistent role for Ryan. He played nickel in 2022 and was picked on in coverage, allowing 340 yards in 197 coverage snaps.
In 2023, Ryan made strides and was LSU’s best defensive back late in the year, but LSU still couldn’t quite decide on a position entering 2024.
Ryan played corner in the opener vs. USC before moving to safety. Ryan spent most of his time at safety or in the slot this fall.
Ryan entered the transfer portal last year but withdrew his name and returned to LSU.
After four years with the Tigers, Ryan leaves with 12 pass breakups, one interception, and 25 stops, according to PFF.
Transfer portal losses are beginning to pile up for LSU. The Tigers will have a hard time building depth in 2025, as Ryan is the sixth Tiger defensive back to enter the transfer portal.
Ryan took to Instagram to announce the news.
