For Rutgers football, home games during the 2023 season will look different than years past. Each game will have a theme. On Tuesday, it was announced that Military Appreciation Day will be held on November fourth when Ohio State visits Piscataway.
During the game, Rutgers players will wear white helmets with the American flag inside the ‘Block R.’ A flyover by the New Jersey National Guard will take place following the national anthem. Part of the festivities will include the return of the R Heroes initiative, which has allowed thousands of current and former military personnel to attend Rutgers football games for free since 2015.
Military Appreciation is the sixth theme that has been announced. The others include The Back to the Birthplace Game (Sunday, Sept. 3), Blackout (Sept. 9), Scarlet Out/R Community Day (Sept. 16), $1 Slice Day (Sept. 30) and Homecoming & Family Weekend (Oct. 14).
Before kickoff, The Rutgers Boardwalk will be open and be the place to stop. A pregame parade will be held featuring military personnel. Beat Ohio State buttons, posters, and shakers will also be given out.
Additionally, at halftime, the Marching Scarlet Knights will salute veterans with recognition of each military branch. The only game without a theme is Saturday, November 25th, when Maryland comes to SHI Stadium.
