On Monday, Rutgers football head coach Greg Schiano announced that quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has been cleared through the injury protocol and will start this weekend against Michigan.
Wimsatt was injured in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss at Minnesota. It was a rough day for the offense as a whole, with Wimsatt going 6-of-17 for 68 yards with an interception and a fumble lost.
Rutgers hosts Michigan on Saturday night. It would be Wimsatt’s first home start in Big Ten play, with this past Saturday representing his first Big Ten start.
Having enrolled in Rutgers early last September after playing three games of his senior season, Wimsatt appeared in four games at Rutgers while maintaining his redshirt.
In speaking with reporters on Monday, Schiano said of Wimsatt that “I think he’s going to be fine.”
“Gavin is going to be our starter,” Schiano told reporters on Monday before being asked to elaborate on that decision.
“I think he showed what he’s capable of, and now we have to get consistent of doing that but that’s not just Gavin. As I’ve talked to you guys before in building a program, there’s a lot of steps,” Schiano said. “The last step is consistency because it’s the hardest step, right, to do something right once, once you get taught the skill and you know the scheme, you can do it right once, but did you do it right over and over again against an opponent that’s trying to make you do it wrong. That’s consistency and that’s where we are working to get there.”
The apparent move to Wimsatt as the starter comes after Noah Vedral returned the week before and led Rutgers to a 24-17 comeback win over Indiana. In that game, Vedral was 12-of-24 for 113 yards with a touchdown and three rushing attempts for nine yards.
