For Rutgers football, the 2023 campaign will look a little different. There will be seven themed games, including Rutgers football blackout, set for September 9 when Temple visits Piscataway. Fans are encouraged to black and arrive early to see the pregame light show. The team will wear its black uniforms and helmets.
The only other themes that have been announced are Back to The Birthplace (Sept.3) and Homecoming & Family Weekend (Oct.14). The remaining four themes will be announced in the coming weeks.
While the fans will be cheering for a win, there will also be plenty of reasons to be at SHI Stadium that Sunday. Giveaways will include black “Beat Temple” buttons, shakers, Blackout t-shirts for all students, and the Blackout version of the limited-edition new Rutgers comic series. At halftime, there will also be a fireworks display.

The Blackout game will not only be about football as Rutgers will also celebrate Spirit Day. Youth cheer and dance programs that participate will perform on the field with the Rutgers Spirit Squad.
As the Scarlet Knights look to finish over .500 for the first time under Greg Schiano, they are making an effort to connect more with their fanbase. All of the themes announced so far have represented Rutgers past and future.
