Rutgers baseball: Andy Axelson has taken his game to another level

Andy Axelson continues to impress for Rutgers baseball.

Entering the 2023 campaign, Andy Axelson was not seen as an offensive weapon for Rutgers. The New Jersey native had 21 hits through his first 98 career at-bats. He had only driven in eight runs and was still looking for his first career home run. However, he has been a completely different player over the last few months.

Through 35 games, the redshirt senior is hitting .309 with 25 runs batted in. He has also shown some power as six of his 30 hits of gone for extra bases. five of which have been home runs. While his playing time has steadily increased since his Rutgers debut in 2019, Axelson has taken on a more significant role this season.

Additionally, Axelson has been on fire at the plate as the Big Ten tournament approaches. The Roxbury High School product has seven runs batted in in his last six games. During that span, he has only gone hitless once.

Due to his success this season, Axelson will play a more prominent role than anticipated in the playoffs. He has set career highs in almost every category offensively, including home runs, RBI, extra-base hits, doubles, and batting average. That is not a bad way to end a college career.

As the Scarlet Knights look to make a deep playoff run, Axelson will be a player to watch. If he can continue his recent success, the Rutgers offense will be hard to stop.
