As the 2024 college baseball season inches closer by the day, the Scarlet Knights have been busy adding for the future. On Wednesday, Rutgers announced that Jan Avila will join the team in 2025. The talented shortstop started his collegiate career at Amarillo College.
In his first season as a Badger, Avila posted a .376 batting average in 178 at-bats. He also showed some power with 17 extra-base hits, including 12 doubles. Due to his success at the plate, Avila earned All-Conference honors. With the Puerto Rican native in the mix starting next season, Rutgers offense will be harder to face.
Although Avila’s Rutgers debut is still months away, it will be a moment he will never forget. He will become the second member of his family to compete at the NCAA Division I level. His uncle played for Georgia Southern.

While Avila is excited to start the next chapter of his career, Rutgers was not the only team interested in his services. Their competition included UAB, the University of New Mexico, and the University of Missouri.

Before he says goodbye to Amarillo, Avila has unfinished business.
“My second year I hope to have a great season and that our team makes regionals. We’ve got a great team to accomplish that this year,” Avila told Badger Athletics.
