Rudy Gobert provides update on coronavirus, wishes he would have taken warnings seriously

“I wish I would have took this thing more seriously.”

The NBA suspended its season last week when Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. In the few days since Gobert’s diagnosis, Donovan Mitchell and Christian Wood have also tested positive for the virus.

Gobert, in particular, came under scrutiny after news broke of his diagnosis because he jokingly touched microphones and recorders after a press conference to make light of the coronavirus pandemic. When he ultimately tested positive for COVID-19 just a couple days later, it served as a wake-up call to Gobert about the seriousness of his actions. He apologized and pledged to donate money to support arena workers.

On Sunday, Gobert posted a video on Twitter to provide an update on his health. He also urged fans to take the warnings about coronavirus seriously — more seriously than he did.

Gobert said:

“What’s up, everyone? It’s Rudy Gobert. Just wanted to give you guys an update. I’m gonna start by saying thank you to all the people that have been supportive and for all the positive energy. It really means a lot. As for myself, I’ve been feeling a little better every single day. Thanks to the healthcare people of Utah and Oklahoma City and all the great people around me. As you may already know, I just wanted to make sure to remind you guys to keep washing your hands frequently with soap and water. Try to avoid touching your face, your nose, your eyes and of course try to avoid making unnecessary contact with people. It’s all about protecting yourself and the people around you. I wish I would have took this thing more seriously, and I hope everyone else will do so because we can do it together. Take care and stay safe.”

Let’s hope others can refrain from vilifying Gobert and, instead, use his experience as motivation to take the necessary precautions when it comes to the coronavirus. It could save lives.
