The Houston Texans addressed a defensive need with the selection of LSU cornerback Derek Stingley in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft Thursday night.
Houston shored up their cornerback group with the Stingley pick at No. 3 overall — a good use of their initial set of two first-round picks.
The Texans had another first-rounder at No. 13 overall in Round 1, picked up from the Cleveland Browns in a trade earlier in the offseason. Houston flipped the pick to the Philadelphia Eagles to move down to No. 15 overall, along with picking up more draft capital.
Houston then used their pick from Philadelphia to take Texas A&M guard Kenyon Green.
Count guard-tackle Tytus Howard as a Texans player happy with the club’s first-round decisions.

“It was a good draft night for us,” Howard tweeted, “welcome to the team [Derek Stingley] and [Kenyon Green].”
The Stingley move helps the defense. The Green pick allows Houston to keep Howard at right tackle, where he excels, and move the rookie inside to play guard.
No wonder the former 2019 first-round pick is pleased.
