Rory McIlroy had not been himself in 2021 — and that’s what made a shot like this one so special. McIlroy stepped up to the first tee on Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship with a preposterous line in mind. He blasted the ball over the trees to right, and dropped it on the fairway so it ran even closer to the green.
But it wasn’t just his tee shot that was excellent. The aggressive line — and impeccable execution — put McIlroy in good position for the approach, which he put close enough to the pin to finish off the hole with a birdie on the par-4.
It was just a gorgeous hole. Here’s a look.
