One thing new Washington Redskins head coach Ron Rivera isn’t doing upon arriving is just handing the offense over the first-year passer Dwayne Haskins.
Rivera has made it clear since showing up on the scene that he’s ready to see a competition at the position unfold.
“What we’re trying to do right now is to develop that plan for his development as we go forward,” Rivera said, according to ESPN’s John Keim. “There’s a couple good veteran quarterbacks that [will] get some opportunities to play as well. We won’t know until we get ready to open up in September, so until then, everything is just a process. We can’t get ahead of it; we’ve got to stay to the plan and make sure we’re preparing ourselves properly to win football games.”
Interestingly, both Case Keenum and Colt McCoy are free agents and Keim noted at least the former would be open to returning. That makes sense, as Keenum has been a journeyman and isn’t likely to get a better starting chance somewhere else. McCoy’s chance was pretty well burned last year.
It’s also worth noting Alex Smith, though his road to recovery remains without a firm timeline. The Redskins also have a top pick in the 2020 draft that could end up being a passer if the new coaching staff wants to go a different route. Unlikely, but don’t forget Arizona going from Josh Rosen to Kyler Murray.
By the time 2020 rolls around, Haskins is probably the favorite to be starter. But rest assured Rivera will explore all options while planning to at least develop the first-round product.
