Life in the NFL hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing thus far for Washington Redskins quarterback Dwayne Haskins. As soon as he was drafted into the league with the No. 15 overall pick in 2019, there were instantly rumors that his team didn’t want him, his new coaching staff was upset about his arrival, and the only reason he landed in Washington was thanks to the owner, who was a fan of his.
It didn’t get better once the season started either. He was thrown into action before he was ready and set up to fail by a coach that was in a win-now situation when Haskins needed time to develop. Even his first career win was anything but victorious, as the several postgame hours and days were spent criticizing the rookie for missing the final snap because he was celebrating with teammates and fans.
Fast forward to this year, and it still wasn’t picture-perfect for Haskins. He had a new coach in Ron Rivera, but the team had a chance to draft a QB like Tua Tagovailoa in the 2020 NFL Draft, which could send Haskins on his way. Rivera stated that the team wasn’t interested in doing that, but rumors still swirled. According to Haskins, his coach told him one thing during that time to calm his nerves: ‘Trust me.’
“Throughout the whole process Ron was just telling me to trust him,” Haskins said via NBC Sports Washington. “I did so it worked out.”
Now, as the Redskins enter an unknown future in the NFL alongside every other team, Haskins will at least be able to go forward knowing that the guy in charge is in his corner.
“I feel really confident having guys that believe in me,” Haskins said. “I think I’m going to have a good year this year.”
