Rome Odunze didn’t record a catch and only recorded one target from quarterback Caleb Williams as the two top 10 picks both made their preseason debuts for the Chicago Bears in a 33-6 victory over the Buffalo Bills.
Odunze’s one target from Williams came in the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete, and after the game, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner said that by the regular season, those throws should turn into touchdowns.
“Rome and I talked about it and that comes from time and getting on the same page,” Williams said after the game. “I thought he was going to take it high because I thought he saw the guy, which he told me did, I thought he saw the guy that was below him.”
“I thought he was either going to settle or go to the back pylon and he started coming out flat and by then I had to let the ball go and I tried to put it at the back pylon and give him a chance to see if he could run under it.”
While Odunze and Williams have formed a strong bond in camp, there’s no substitute for live reps against another team and as the pair continues to build their bond, it appears those throws won’t fall incomplete for much longer.
Even though Odunze was held without a catch, another former Husky wasn’t. Wide receiver Dante Pettis hauled in a 34-yard reception from quarterback Austin Reed to give the Bears great field position later on in the game.
