Rod Thorn: Sixers made a push to trade for Michael Jordan in 1984

Former Chicago Bulls general manager Rod Thorn confirms that the Philadelphia 76ers tried to make a deal for Michael Jordan.

The biggest topic of conversation that has everybody buzzing is “The Last Dance” documentary that is about Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. With everybody stuck in quarantine and with no sports on currently, it helps people take care of that itch for some type of sports conversation.

Jordan was selected with the third overall pick by the Bulls in the 1984 draft and it was a no brainer pick there for Chicago. However, there were some teams who were interested in taking Jordan as well and one of those teams was the Philadelphia 76ers.

Former Bulls general manager Rod Thorn, who was the general manager to select Jordan, hopped on the Kap & Co. Podcast for ESPN 1000 in Chicago to discuss the trade offers he received for Jordan on draft night.

Thorn said:

You know something? They did. In fact, Philadelphia had made a strong offer for Michael. Dallas had made a strong offer for Michael and there were a couple of other teams that had inquired about the pick, [but] their offers weren’t as good as those two, but yeah. There were people who were certainly interested in Michael.

Thorn did not go into any detail about what the Sixers offered, but it is interesting to see that Philadelphia did, in fact, make an offer. The Sixers ended up selecting Charles Barkley with the fifth overall pick who turned in an incredible career, but imagine Jordan with Julius Erving and Moses Malone. The Sixers would have come away with another championship or two. [lawrence-related id=29864,29858,29851]
