Rockets rookie Alperen Sengun explains his flexing celebrations

Rockets rookie Alperen Sengun explains his flexing celebration: “I love my muscles. I have more muscle now than at the beginning of the season, which is why you’re seeing those reactions.”

HOUSTON — If you’ve watched many Rockets games in the 2021-22 season, you’re likely aware of the “flexing” celebration following many highlight plays by Turkish big man Alperen Sengun.

In recent weeks, with the 19-year-old rookie showing signs of improved play, those celebrations have only increased in number.

That was certainly the case in Sunday’s home game versus Memphis. While the Rockets didn’t have enough collectively to win, Sengun was brilliant in 23 minutes off the bench with 12 points (71.4% FG), 9 rebounds, and 3 assists. Many of his five made field goals were of the highlight variety, which led to Sengun bringing out the celebration.

Fans at Toyota Center went wild. With a smile, Sengun explained postgame (via a translator) why he’s so fond of the celebration move:

I love my muscles. I have more muscle now than at the beginning of the season, which is why you’re seeing those reactions.

Sengun will have his next flexing opportunity when Washington visits Houston on Monday night, with tipoff set for 7:00 p.m. CDT.
