Houston Rockets rookie Jabari Smith Jr. on Friday continued a strong resurgence and produced a career night in a loss at home to the Dallas Mavericks.
Smith recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot in the 112-106 decision. He finished 10-of-17 from the field, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range, in 33 minutes for his sixth double-double of the season.
The third pick topped his previous season-high of 23 points. He is the third rookie this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in a game, joining Paolo Banchero and Walker Kessler.
“He was in such a good rhythm tonight (on offense) whether it was his catch-and-shoot or his little pull-ups,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said. “He does rise to the occasion on nights when we need him and we need him a lot. I’m really proud of him for the way he played and happy for him because it is hard being a rookie.”

Smith continued to show improvement in his career performance.
He went through the typical early season rookie struggles with the Rockets but is on an upward trajectory over their last 15 games. He looks to be more comfortable on the court and is shooting the ball more efficiently from beyond the arc.
Smith averaged 10.2 points, 6.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocked shots on 29.9% shooting from 3-point range over his first 15 games. In his last 16 games, Smith is posting 14.1 points and 7.4 rebounds on 38.7% shooting from distance.
He explained the difference in his recent play.
“Just (the) feel,” Smith said, via Lachard Binkley of The Dream Shake. “Learning myself and learning my teammates. Know when I’m going to get my shots, confidence, and the ball going in the hoop. That’s really the difference.”
Smith looks to be settling in on the court and is showcasing his ability as a shooter. He continues to contribute on both ends of the court and is emerging as one of the most productive rookies this season in Houston after a slow start.
