Rockets GM Daryl Morey optimistic 2019-20 NBA season can be saved

In comments Tuesday to SportsTalk 790, Daryl Morey maintained his recent optimism that the 2019-20 season will eventually proceed.

Rockets GM Daryl Morey remains optimistic that the 2019-20 NBA season can be salvaged, according to new comments made Tuesday afternoon on flagship radio station SportsTalk 790 in Houston.

The season has been on hiatus since March 11 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver indicated Monday that he does not anticipate being able to make a decision on when — or if — the season will resume until at least May.

While Morey said several times that he did not know of any potential timetable for resumption, he did maintain his recent optimism that the 2020 NBA playoffs could occur in some fashion.

Here’s how Tuesday’s exchange went with 790’s Adam Clanton:

Clanton: Is there any part of you personally that worries that this was a year of Russell Westbrook’s prime, of James Harden’s prime, that may or may not be lost because of something like this?

Morey: Well, I mean, we’re very optimistic there will be a season. So if there’s no season somehow, then obviously. Yeah. We have, I think, a very good chance to win this year. … Our time is now. I think we have the most veteran, oldest team in the league, so losing a season would be not ideal. But we’re optimistic that we’ll get it in.

The full interview with Clanton and Adam Wexler also includes Morey’s perspective on recent COVID-19 research; preparing for the 2020 NBA Draft during the NBA’s scheduling upheaval; entertainment shows such as “Tiger King” that he’s watched during the hiatus; and much more.
