Rockets donate unused Toyota Center food to rescue group

With Toyota Center events on hold, the Rockets donated over 600 pounds of unused produce to food rescue group Second Servings of Houston.

With entertainment events on hold for the foreseeable future due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, the Houston Rockets made the best of a bad situation by donating more than 600 pounds of produce to food rescue organization Second Servings of Houston.

The food would have otherwise been wasted, since all events at Toyota Center are suspended for the time being due to the shutdown.

Founded in 2014, Second Servings describes itself as Houston’s only prepared and perishable food rescue organization. They take unsold and unserved food from regulated food businesses, including hotels, distributors, and retailers, and deliver it safely to approved charitable meal sites such as soup kitchens, shelters, and low-income housing.

According to Second Servings, one in five people face food insecurity in Harris County — where an estimated 31% of available food goes to waste. As a result, the organization’s mission is to redirect edible surplus away from landfills and to people who could use it.

With restaurants severely limited given social-distancing measures, that mission could be even more important in the days and weeks ahead.
