Rockets convert rookie guard Daishen Nix to two-way contract

After attending training camp on an Exhibit 10 deal, Daishen Nix appears to have turned enough heads to stick around with the Rockets.

Rookie guard Daishen Nix, who played alongside Jalen Green with last season’s G League Ignite, is sticking around in Houston. Per Shams Charania of The Athletic, the Rockets are converting the undrafted 19-year-old to a two-way contract for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

The Rockets had an open two-way roster spot after waiving Tyler Bey earlier this week. Nix joins second-year forward Anthony Lamb as the two recipients of Houston’s two-way deals entering the new season.

Under the terms of a two-way, Nix will be able to shuttle back and forth this season between the Rockets and Houston’s G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Vipers. The 6-foot-5 guard will be eligible to play in up to 50 of the Rockets’ 82 regular-season games, and he will receive a flat salary of $462,629 (half of the rookie minimum).

Nix was brought to 2021-22 training camp by the Rockets on an Exhibit 10 contract, but he had to be converted to either a two-way deal or a standard contract to stick around beyond the preseason. While Nix might have still joined the Vipers, even had he not received a two-way deal, that outcome would have been highly uncertain — since waiving Nix would have allowed him to be signed by other NBA teams.

With the G League Ignite, Nix averaged 8.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.3 assists in 26.5 minutes per game last season. The rebounding total reflects his unique blend of size and strength for a lead guard.
