Robert Saleh says Denzel Mims was ‘gritty’ and ‘one of our six best wide receivers’

Could Denzel Mims make the final roster?

Could there be a resolution to the Denzel Mims/Jets saga? Sunday’s performance over the Jets plus head coach Robert Saleh’s post-game comments seems to think there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Mims caught seven passes for 102 yards and a touchdown in the Jets’ 31-27 win over the Giants to finish the preseason 3-0. This was Mims’ first game since publicly requesting a trade on Thursday, as he grew frustrated with his role and lack of opportunities.

On Sunday, he played into the fourth quarter, but he was also, by far, the most-targeted receiver on Sunday. He saw eight targets. No other Jet saw more than four.

After the game, Saleh called Mims “gritty” and “one of our six best wide receivers”. That could be a sign that the Jets will keep Mims when they cut their roster down to 53 players, as they very well could keep six receivers. The top four of Corey Davis, Elijah Moore, Garrett Wilson and Braxton Berrios are locks. If the Jets keep six receivers, you have to think Mims has a good shot of sticking around now. Teams must be at 53 by 4:00 eastern on Tuesday.
