Washington Redskins coach Ron Rivera was giving a speech on Thursday afternoon during a virtual leadership luncheon, and he expressed his confidence in the ability to conduct the NFL Draft remotely without a hitch, should all of the technology be up to par.
Just a few minutes after he made this statement, Rivera’s video feed crashed due to technical difficulties. Ahh, the irony.
While this obviously doesn’t mean that Rivera will have the same technical difficulties in next week’s draft, it definitely doesn’t instill a ton of confidence. What if the Redskins are on the clock and several of their top minds are at odds on a pick? After a couple minutes of back and forth, with the clock winding down, the team looks to Rivera to make a final decision — one that could significantly impact the future of the team.
***Radio Silence***
Not a fun scenario to play out. Obviously, the NFL has some safety nets in case this were to happen, and any team will be able to place a call to the league and make a pick by phone as a last resort.
If you want to look on the bright side, Thursday’s technology snafu might have actually been a good thing — maybe it red-flagged a potential glitch that can now be fixed before the stakes rise next week. If this didn’t happen during such a low-risk scenario, it could have been much worse. Let’s choose to believe that narrative, and be glad that we caught the problem before it became deadly.
