Richard Sherman says the Seahawks will have to keep Geno Smith

Right now it seems crazy to allow Smith to test the market in March once his one-year deal expires.

Seahawks great Richard Sherman was never a huge fan of the former guy’s game, but he has become a vocal supporter of Geno Smith on Twitter.

Here’s Sherman sharing Smith’s gorgeous 36-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Lockett from Sunday’s loss to the Saints.

And here’s Sherman saying that Smith deserves Comeback Player of the Year award and Seattle will have to keep him.

Pete Carroll isn’t likely to give a straightforward answer on this no matter how well Geno Smith performs for the rest of the season. That said, right now it seems crazy to allow Smith to test the market in March once his one-year deal expires.

However, the Seahawks have made a habit of low-balling their top pending free agents, so it’s possible he’ll get a chance. Smith is performing at a very high level at a premium position, so he will get a big raise one way or another next year if this keeps up.

Heading into the season we expected Smith to sit at some point and allow Seattle to get an extended look at Drew Lock but that seems like a million years ago. Smith is the guy for now and should be for the foreseeable future.

Whether the Seahawks draft a quarterback next year or not, their best chance to win is starting Geno Smith Week 1.
