Revisiting LaVar Ball’s promise that the Lakers would never win a title after trading Lonzo Ball

Last summer after Lonzo Ball was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers, LaVar Ball promised the Lakers would not win another a title, a claim that didn’t even last a season.

LaVar Ball is always willing to offer up an audacious prediction. Make him angry and even he can take it to another level.

Last summer, LaVar’s oldest son was traded from the Los Angeles Lakers to the New Orleans Pelicans in a package that included Brandon Ingram and Josh Hart and brought Anthony Davis back to California. LaVar and Lonzo were both at LaMelo’s Drew League contest when the news broke, giving LaVar a platform to speak his mind in the immediate aftermath.

His proclamation could not have been louder. In the parking lot outside the arena, Ball’s spitefulness led to him declaring that the Lakers would not win another title.

“Like, I said I guarantee … I’ll say it again: It will be the worst move the Lakers ever did in they life and they’ll never win another championship. Guarantee it. They’re going to regret it; I’m going to have fun with it. I told y’all it was crashing down. Now, it completely crashed, but at least my son is off the boat before the thing exploded.

“I gave ’em a chance. You can rewind it and go back, and I said, “You get the three Ball brothers, you going to survive this. You let ’em go … oh, it’s going to be a cold day in hell. Trust me on that.”

Fast forward 16 months to Sunday night and the Lakers captured the 2020 NBA championship with a thorough beatdown of the Miami Heat in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. The title came in the Lakers’ first season with Davis and he put on a splendid performance throughout the playoffs and particularly in the Finals.

While LaVar may have been spiteful, it didn’t trickle down to the rest of his family. LaMelo predicted a Lakers-Celtics Finals showdown a month ago. On Sunday, he tweeted about the Lakers earning their 17th title and LeBron James earning his fourth.

The main takeaway is that LaVar’s ability to speak things into existence may have reached its peak.
