According to reports, a rematch between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, who hooked up in a winner-take-all, $9 million duel in the Las Vegas desert in November 2018, will take place.
Here’s the kicker: joining the twosome will be a pair of NFL quarterback icons – Tom Brady and Peyton Manning. According to Golf.com and CNBC reports, Brady would pair with Mickelson and Manning would play with Woods. Manning and Woods played together in the pro-am at the Memorial last year.
CNBC, citing an unnamed person familiar with the negotiations, said the match could happen in May. Pay-per-view is unlikely. Instead, CNBC reported the match would be televised on one of the WarnerMedia company’s television networks such as Turner Sports’ TNT.
While Mickelson hauled away the $9 million by defeating Woods on the 22nd hole in the November match, all money raised from the second event would benefit charities associated with coronavirus relief. The coronavirus global epidemic has shut down nearly every sports league worldwide, including the PGA Tour.
Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, declined to comment on the reports. Mickelson’s agent, Steve Loy, told ESPN he couldn’t provide many details because “there are many moving parts.”
Earlier in the week, Mickelson hinted on Twitter that a rematch is in the works.
The PGA Tour, which would have to sanction the event, said in a statement, it hasn’t done so as of now. “Discussions along these lines have been ongoing for quite some time, but nothing has been approved by the PGA Tour.”
According to a report in Golf.com, which cited an unnamed person familiar with the plans, the match would take place in Florida. Spectators will not be allowed, per social distancing guidelines.
