Ryan Switzer’s time in Pittsburgh is likely over.

In just a few hours we should know who the Pittsburgh Steelers will have on their 16-man practice squad for the upcoming season. But according to ESPN NFL reporter Brooke Pryor, wide receiver Ryan Switzer won’t be a part of it.

There are a couple of ways to read this but it sounds to me like the Steelers are simply moving on from Switzer. It could mean Switzer isn’t planning to sign with the Steelers PS because he is holding out for a spot where he’s going to have a better chance to play.

It might be a bit of both.

Pittsburgh not bringing Switzer back into the fold does tell us one thing. Despite the amount of pull quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has with this roster, he couldn’t save Switzer. I know a lot of fans want to believe that Roethlisberger dictates who stays and who goes on offense but the release of Switzer is proof this probably isn’t the case.

The Steelers chose to only keep five wide receivers on the 53-man roster so look for them to bring back one or two of the talented young guys they had in training camp.
