Report: Washington coaches make it clear to Dwayne Haskins that his job is on the line

After a tough performance against the Cleveland Browns, Washington coaches reportedly notified Haskins that he needs to show improvement.

According to a report from NBC Sports Washington’s JP Finlay, Ron Rivera and other offensive coaches met with QB Dwayne Haskins this past week to make it clear that they are sticking with him as the starter, though that could easily change if he is unable to show some progression and improvement in the future.

The meeting took place after a Week 3 game against the Cleveland Browns where Haskins finished the day with four turnovers, which likely cost Washington the loss in a very winnable game. Here is an excerpt from the article from NBC Sports Washington:

Sources told NBC Sports Washington that during the meeting Rivera explained that while Haskins has a lot of talent and showed significant growth this offseason learning the playbook and in training camp, his play through three games has been lacking. What’s worse, last week’s game in Cleveland showed clear regression and one source explained that cannot continue if Haskins wants to stay on the field. Offensive coaches also sat down with Haskins this week to highlight opportunities to make plays and show missed chances that could lead to better results.

While coaches meeting with the quarterback is quite normal, one source explained the tone of the meetings made clear the gravity of the situation: It’s time to play better.

We got the sense of this early in the week when Rivera revealed that there was in fact a cut-off point where he would pull Haskins should he not see some improvement, but the head coach didn’t reveal what that might look like. We still don’t know, obviously, but it’s clear that Washington needs to see some improvement quickly, or they are willing to move on from the second-year QB.
