Report: Warriors view Australia’s Josh Giddey as ‘a strong possibility’ with No. 7 pick

The Warriors reportedly view Australia’s Josh Giddey as “a strong possibility” with the No. 7 pick in the 2021 NBA draft.

With the Detroit Pistons inching closer to being on the clock with the first pick in the 2021 NBA draft, rumors continue to swirl around different prospects and where they’ll land on Thursday night. With a pair of first-round selections, the Golden State Warriors continue to be at the center of the buzz.

After being linked to different players like UConn’s James Bouknight, Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs and Oregon’s Chris Duarte, another prospect is emerging as a potential candidate for the Warriors on draft night.

According to Connor Letourneau of The San Francisco Chronicle, the Warriors view Australian guard Josh Giddey as “a strong possibility” with the No. 7 selection in the draft.

According to a league source, the Warriors view Giddey as a strong possibility with the No. 7 pick.

At only 18-years-old, Giddey earned a starting point guard role with the Adelaide 36ers in Australia’s NBL, the same league 2020 top-five pick LaMelo Ball played in before being drafted by the Charlotte Hornets.

With the 36ers, Giddey averaged 10.9 points on 42.7% shooting from the floor with 7.5 assists, 7.4 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 28 games.

In the latest mock draft from Cody Taylor of USA TODAY’s Rookie Wire, Giddey came off the board with the No. 10 overall pick to the Memphis Grizzlies.

Via Rookie Wire:

The Grizzlies are reportedly pursuing Giddey should he remain on the board at 10, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN. He recently finished up a stint with the Australian basketball team during their exhibition games in Las Vegas and apparently left an impression on Memphis. He produced 14 points, four rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot versus Nigeria in his lone appearance. He has drawn comparisons to fellow Australian Ben Simmons with his ability to lead his teams and get others involved, something the Grizzlies would like to add next to Ja Morant.

Chatter around what the Golden State Warriors will do with picks No. 7 and No. 14 will only continue to intensify as draft night pushes closer.
