Report: Warriors expect Draymond Green to opt out of final year of contract

The Warriors are reportedly expecting Draymond Green to decline his player option and opt out of the final year of his contract.

Shortly after being named the successor to Bob Myers in the front office, newly appointed general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have to turn his attention to Draymond Green.

According to Marc J. Spears of ESPN and Andscape, the Warriors are expecting the four-time NBA champion and former Defensive Player of the Year to decline his $27 million player option and opt out of the final year of his contract with Golden State. By opting out, Green would become a free agent in the summer.

Per Spears, the Warriors are expected to try to bring Green back if he declines his player option and becomes a free agent.

The Warriors expect Draymond Green to opt out of the final year of his $26 million contract, I’m being told. But Joe Lacob, Dunleavy, the Warriors are going to do everything in their power, if he does as expected, to bring him back.

Along with being named to the All-NBA team twice and making four appearances in the All-Star game, Green has been at the core of Golden State’s defense during their championship runs.

During the 2022-23 season, Green averaged 8.5 points on 52.7% shooting from the field to go along with 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists over 73 games. Green earned a nod to the NBA’s All-Defensive second team.

Before free agency officially begins, Green will have until the June 29 deadline to decline his player option.
