Report: Trent Williams was in contract talks with Vikings before pulling out of deal

Reports show that Williams was so close to going to the Vikings on Friday that he was in contract talks with the team before ending talks.

Are you ready for another chapter in the Trent Williams trade saga yet? Well, ready or not, here one comes.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the potential deal between the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings for Trent Williams was so close to being completed on Friday that Williams and his agent, Vincent Taylor, reportedly were already in contract talks with the Vikings, looking toward the future once he was on the team. Then, of course, everything fell apart.

“The Vikings and his agent had actually talked potential contracts — this is something that should have gotten done,” Rapoport said. “Then you get to yesterday and the Minnesota Vikings find out that Trent Williams, from what I understand, did not want to go to the Vikings, and preferred to play elsewhere. That message was communicated, and I’ve received confirmation from several sources, despite the fact that Trent Williams’ agent just released a statement calling it false reporting.

So the deal was so close to being completed that Trent was already in contract discussions with the Vikings, and he still pulled out? What would cause him to do so?

Obviously, Williams and his agent deny all of this, but Rapoport seems confident in his reporting.

“His statement is actually false, and what I reported is true,” Rapoport said. “Either way, he’s not going to the Vikings.”
