During the 2019 season, there were two major things that kept Pro-Bowl left tackle Trent Williams from joining the Washington Redskins — he was no longer playing for any guaranteed money on his contract, and he had lost all trust in the men who controlled his playing fate.
Now, with the old regime out of the building, and a new coaching staff headed up by Ron Rivera, talks between the two parties have started up again. It was reported earlier this month that Williams and Rivera had met and that the Redskins were eager to get a relationship with the seven-time Pro-Bowler back in a good place. On Monday after a meeting with the NFL’s competition committee, Rivera confirmed that he has met face-to-face with Williams recently.
So, with a relationship on the mend, that seemingly takes care of the trust factor that kept Williams away in 2019. Now, all that’s left, according to The Washington Post, it is mostly financial issues that need to be worked out.
One person with knowledge of the situation said that mostly financial issues stand in the way of Williams coming back, suggesting that Rivera and Williams have worked through the other problems that kept Williams away for all but a week of last season.
That alone is more progress than we’ve heard concerning the Williams situation over the past year, and it’s encouraging to hear, considering the 31-year-old said just a handful of months ago that he doesn’t see himself ever playing for the Redskins again.
They may take a while to come down, but the dominos seem to be falling in the right direction for a reunion between the two parties ahead of the 2020 season.
