If the Houston Texans use their top first-round pick on anything other than a quarterback, it will come as a surprise.
According to D.J. Bien-Aime from ESPN, the Texans informed coaching candidates during their hiring process that they planned on using the No. 2 overall pick on a quarterback.
Taking a quarterback at No. 2 overall kind of pigeonholes Houston and lets the rest of the league know what they plan to do. Being the next pick after No. 1 overall, especially when the Chicago Bears already have a presumptive franchise quarterback in Justin Fields, almost guarantees the Texans get their preferred signal caller.
However, the Indianapolis Colts could be one of the teams that disrupts Houston’s plans if they successfully execute a trade with the Bears for No. 1 overall. If the Colts take a quarterback the Texans like, such as Alabama’s Bryce Young, Houston would have to pivot to another signal caller such as Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis, or potentially even Florida’s Anthony Richardson.
As is the case with the play on the field, the plans are already known by the opposition; it comes down to the execution. The draft process is long and the meandering path will reveal just how Houston lands their quarterback at No. 2 overall — or sooner.
