The Houston Texans may be trying to please their star quarterback after all.
According to a new report from ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the Texans have blocked interview requests involving offensive coordinator Tim Kelly. Graziano reports that teams have sought to interview Kelly for their offensive coordinator vacancies, but Houston has thrown up the block.
If the Texans are trying to keep Kelly, then it indicates the club could be throwing a bone to quarterback Deshaun Watson, who has great chemistry with the 34-year-old play-caller.
“I mean, Tim over the past two years has really taken my game to a whole another level as far as just knowledge, reading defenses, understanding run points and run schemes, understanding the way of different concepts and different situations,” Watson told reporters on Jan. 4. “His knowledge of just the game of football is very, very bright and he really helped me take my game, especially this year, the best football I’ve played in my career.”
Hiring a defensive-minded coach and keeping Kelly is one thing, but hiring an offensive-minded coach and keeping Kelly could prove problematic. However, it is the situation the Texans find themselves as they seek to improve as a team while also keeping their franchise quarterback pleased.
