Report: Team USA finalizing decision to make Warriors’ Steve Kerr next national head coach

Team USA is reportedly finalizing a decision to make Steve Kerr the next men’s basketball national head coach.

Along with coaching the Golden State Warriors, Steve Kerr will reportedly have a new role with Team USA basketball.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, Team USA is finalizing a decision to name Steve Kerr the next national coach.

Kerr will succeed Gregg Popovich as the next head coach of Team USA. The San Antonio Spurs head coach has served as the leader of Team USA hoops since 2016. Prior to that, Duke men’s basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski served as Team USA’s head coach.

Kerr has served as one of Popovich’s assistants with Team USA since 2019. Kerr was a part of the coaching staff that led Team USA to a gold medal in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Other NBA coaches like Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams and Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra will reportedly join Kerr’s coaching staff with Team USA. In addition, Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball coach Mark Few is also expected to join Kerr’s staff.

As a coach and a player, Kerr has a decorated resume that includes eight NBA championships. As the head coach of the Warriors, Kerr has won three NBA titles with an overall record of 572-397. During the 2021-22 NBA campaign, the Warriors have posted a league-best 21-4 record behind Kerr and his staff.

Kerr is set to take over as the head coach of Team USA for the 2023 FIBA World Cup and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
