Report: Steve Nash gauged Dirk Nowitzki’s interest in joining him as assistant coach

Steve Nash is already thinking about who he can surround himself with on his coaching staff in Brooklyn.

With the announcement of Steve Nash’s hiring on Thursday, the Brooklyn Nets also added that Jacque Vaughn will remain with the organization to work as the Hall of Fame point guard’s lead assistant coach.

There’s been no other announcement regarding the rest of the coaching staff, but head coach hirings are usually accompanied by adjustments to the coaching staff.

Apparently, Steve Nash has already been thinking about who he’d like to have alongside him in Brooklyn — and at least one candidate he’s considered is an ex-teammate.

It’s not just any former teammate, either.

Nash “sounded out his longtime former teammate and close friend Dirk Nowitzki to gauge his interest in coming to Brooklyn as an assistant coach,” according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

However, Stein is also reporting, ‘Nowitzki is not looking to return to the game full-time so early in his retirement.’
