The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic is truly remarkable from the most mundane to the grand, all aspects of life are in flux due to the pandemic. For NFL fans, the next big thing on the calendar is the 2020 NFL draft and it is also going to be carried out with significant changes. According to NFL reporter Manish Mehta, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert suggested another when he proposed added three extra rounds to this year’s draft.
According to Mehta, Colbert spoke on a conference call and proposed to add three extra rounds to the 2020 NFL draft in order to simplify things in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It makes perfect sense really. As disrupted as the flow of the draft is going to be this year, adding undrafted free agents is going to be a circus. Adding three extra rounds would allow teams to get three of their priority free agents — in theory — before they were out on the open market.
The NFL has only used a seven-round draft since 1994. In 1977 they went eight rounds until 1993 and from 1967 to 1976 the draft was 12 rounds. In fact, the NFL draft has been as high as 30 rounds in some years.
